Nature-Deficit Disorder

I have a little more leisure time right now, so I decided to read a book that I have been wanting to read for about a year now: "Last Child in the Woods" by Richard Louv.  I have immensely enjoyed this book.  My short synopsis of it is this: kids do not play outside like we did when we were kids...what are the consequences of this?  Read the book to find out. :)
As I was reading, I was encourage to find out that although my kids definitely should get out and have more nature experiences, they are not as deficet in them as many others.  Inspired by this read, I took the kids outside with nothing more than string and scissors and let them create.  Everyone built their own raft with twigs (including me!) and we are going to take them to Minnehaha Falls soon to test them in the creek for floatability.  Is bigger better?  We shall see.

We also built a structure, similar to a teepee, weaving fallen Oak leaves into the branches.  Who knew that sticks could provide so much fun?  We played outside with nothing more than sticks, string, and leaves for over three hours!  No joke!

Cheers!
